A great number of local organisations were represented and the sun shone all day. What more could we have asked for? Well, maybe a rise in temperature – the stone slabs beneath our feet were quite unforgiving – but there was free coffee for stallholders courtesy of Ripon Community Link’s Walled Garden project.

- [Mark Billingham](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/mark-billingham/): This was my first Mark Billingham book and I was enthralled from the start. I really enjoyed the mixture of violence and humour, especially his detective’s little asides into completely irrelevant areas. The outcome took me completely by surprise, which can only be a good thing. I’m now looking forward to getting my hands on the next book in the Detective Miller series.

I’m particularly taken with the lovely illustrations. On a more serious note, though, my heart goes out to all the hardworking people robbed by cynical and callous individuals and groups. What may seem trivial to the latter can be a devastating loss to a small business and even tip it over the edge into bankruptcy. It appeared a few weeks ago on the website, but I was very pleased to be tipped off by a friend this morning that it was also in print.

Situated in the Hayes Conference Centre with its magnificent gardens, it’s the perfect place to unwind and swap ideas with friends old and new. The rooms in the Main House vary considerably in size and layout, but I have always chosen to be in Lakeside, built over a century later. - [My latest release!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/my-latest-release/):   ‘From counseling in the Catskills to bagels for breakfast in the Bronx’, not to mention innocently trying to book a room in a brothel on the Mexican border! This is the book that I’ll be launching at Swanwick Writers’ Summer School in Derbyshire next month and thereafter locally. Ripon launch (or launches) not yet sorted out, so please watch this space. For anyone further afield, copies are already available worldwide on Amazon and I’d be very grateful for some reviews. It’s been a real labour of love.  
- [A Milestone for Ripon Writers' Group](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/a-milestone-for-ripon-writers-group/): Having joined RWG over 20 years ago, I was very pleased to attend the 1000th meeting last night. Founded in 1982 by the late Daphne Peters, whose husband Joe cut the celebration cake, a great many writers have come and gone from the Group. Unfortunately, health issues or other commitments kept some of the current members from joining us, but those of us who made it enjoyed reminiscing about past events and reading extracts from RWG publications put together over the years.
- [Poetry Galore](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/poetry-galore/):   The last few weeks have been all about sharing poems included in the recent anthology of Ripon Poets.  St John’s Sharow had a wonderful afternoon of Piano, Pimms & Poetry (at which I read from the pulpit!) with afternoon tea and then it was time for this year’s Ripon Theatre Festival. Poetry was included for the first time and I took part in events at the wonderfully named Portly Pig on Kirkgate and then at the Little Ripon Bookshop. Each attracted a good audience on what was an idyllic summer’s day.

During the dismal lockdown year of 2020, when unmasked contact with other humans was restricted to a tiny bubble, I delivered my first (and so far only) author talk on Zoom. Hosted by Canadian author and publisher Edwin Rydberg, it took place on 16th September. Edwin knew exactly which questions to ask to get me talking and the discussion was to form part of his Indie Book Showcase.

- [Promoting Yorkshire Authors arrives in Ripon](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/promoting-yorkshire-authors-arrives-in-ripon/): At my suggestion, PYA made enquiries at the Claro Lounge and got the go ahead for a book fair on Sunday, 11th May. It was a warm, sunny day, perfect for the V E Day commemorations and the installation of Ripon’s new mayor. Situated next to the Town Hall, the Lounge offered a good view of the proceedings taking place outside, so we didn’t miss out.   With seven titles to display, I was allocated half a table and very much enjoyed talking to everyone who came by.  A free copy of its prequel ‘Foreshadowing’ was on offer to anyone […]
- [A successful launch](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/a-successful-launch/): The open mic night at the Claro Lounge to launch ‘This Hear This Now’, an Anthology of Ripon Poets, was very well attended.   It includes two of my poems and I chose to read ‘Elegy Written in Ripon Market Place’ (with apologies to Thomas Gray). Much as I love our little cathedral city, not everyone respects its ‘ancient charms’ and this is my reproach to litter louts.By the way, the lighting affected the shot and seems to have added something odd to the hand holding the book. It isn’t really like that!

- [A chance to show off my new hair do!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/4137/): Networking is definitely the name of the game for writers and I was able to persuade fellow Swanwicker Phil Collins to join us at Ripon Writers’ Group last night. Phil gave a very entertaining illustrated talk on comedy writing, of which he is a master, having written (and often performed in) numerous sketches, short plays and a couple of pantomimes. Phil, Cathy and I meet in Swanwick, Derbyshire each year at the Writers’ Summer School and are looking forward to August already. - [Sheer escapism!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/sheer-escapism/):   Every now and then it’s enjoyable to relax and watch something just for the sheer pleasure of it. Such was the case last night at the Grand Theatre in Leeds. The actors who took over the roles so familiar to fans of the TV series were spot on and the stagecraft left absolutely nothing to be desired. No wonder then that the packed theatre rang to the sound of very well deserved applause.

- [Honouring an old tradition](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/honouring-an-old-tradition/):   It is Boxing Day 2024, the weather is glorious and I have just emerged from the annual carol service in the Cellarium of Fountains Abbey. Hundreds of people were in attendance, many of whom had taken part in the annual pilgrimage from Ripon Cathedral. On this one day of the year, the National Trust allows free entrance to the estate until 12 noon, which is much appreciated by non-members, including my son Richard who took the photo above. - [All writers need friends!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/all-writers-need-friends/): All writers do indeed need friends and belonging to more than one local group, as some of us do, can only be a good thing. There were so many of us at Write-On! Ripon’s Christmas do at the Claro Lounge that we had to have a photograph taken from both ends of the table. Loungers have access to a very well stocked bar and so it was quite appropriate that the suggested theme for the final meeting of the year was ‘The Morning After the Night Before’!
- [Red kites fly again!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/red-kites-fly-again/): Only a very occasional poet, I was very pleased to find this in the BBC Wildlife magazine. Eccup reservoir is very close to North Yorkshire’s Harewood House, where there is a feeding station for these magnificent birds. The Emmerdale village is also in the grounds, so I had many opportunities to observe them during my years as a television ‘extra’. They disrupted filming on more than one occasion, notably on the day when some helium balloons were launched to celebrate a character’s birthday and the birds attacked them. - [Caught on camera](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/caught-on-camera/): Having gone along to watch the filming of Bargain Hunt at our local auction house, purely for the experience, I was amused to discover that I’d been caught on camera. Umpteen people have been in touch to say that they spotted me and wondered what I’d bought.  The answer to that is nothing, but the staff at Elstob & Elstob were very friendly and even gave me a cup of tea. - [Swanwick 2024](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/swanwick-2024-2/):     This year marks the Diamond Anniversary of the Swanwick Writers’ Summer School and my 18th consecutive attendance. ‘Swanwick’ is without doubt the oldest writers’ school in the UK and, quite possibly, in the whole world. Born in 1948 to bring UK-wide writers’ circles together annually, it has only been cancelled once in its long history. That was, of course, in 2020, the year in which Covid-19 had such a damaging effect on almost every aspect of our lives. - [What a weekend!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/what-a-weekend/): Hardly a moment spent at my desk this weekend, as it was taken up with attending fundraisers for two of Ripon’s good causes. Saturday saw me at a garden party on the lawn behind the Old Deanery. Held to raise funds for the ‘Save our Trees’ campaign, it offered afternoon tea, musical entertainment and a talk on the importance of saving ancient trees. The trees currently in danger are the ones that would be cut down if plans for a large new building to house extra facilities for Ripon Cathedral go ahead. - [A poetry book launched by one of our own!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/a-poetry-book-launched-by-one-of-our-own/): Even without the inducement of drinks and cakes, Write-On! Ripon members would have turned out in force to hear our very own Caroline Matusiak reading some the poems inspired by her regular travels on the Number 36 Ripon to Harrogate bus route. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Copies of the new book are currently available from Caroline herself or from The Little Ripon Bookshop.
- [I get by with a little help from my friends!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/i-get-by-with-a-little-help-from-my-friends/): So sang the Beatles and how right they were!  Life would be so much poorer without friends and here are a few of mine, all connected one way or another with the Write-On! Ripon group.  Thinking up something new to write for our weekly meetings in the Claro Lounge certainly keeps my brain exercised. The photo above, though, was taken at one of our social evenings, which took place at Silva Bells near the Cathedral. The food was good, the drink flowed and so did the conversation.

- [Featured in Yorkshire Life](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/featured-in-yorkshire-life/):   This double-paged spread in Yorkshire Life was written to help Ripon Community Link, my favourite local charity, and I hope that it will attract many more visitors to the wonderful Walled Garden. The words – at least an edited version of them – are mine, but I was careful to submit a draft to RCL for approval before submitting the article to the magazine.  The photographs are part of a selection sent to me by the charity and I am pleased to see that the correct acknowledgement has been given.

- [Sister Act the Musical](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/sister-act-the-musical/): REVIEW: ‘Dazzling’ Sister Act musical set to open at Harrogate Theatre – Your Harrogate Always happy to write a review for local groups, I found attending the dress rehearsal of RAOS Musical Company’s dress rehearsal at Harrogate Theatre a truly joyous experience. It’s a long time since I trod the boards there myself – as one of the Mamas in Fiddler on the Roof – but I could well imagine all the frenzied activity backstage. - [A small triumph for Write-On! Ripon](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/a-small-triumph-for-write-on-ripon/): As well as our regular Tuesday meetings, where we share whatever we’re currently working on, some of us like to get together once in a while for a quiz evening. The photo shows us at a Boroughbridge High School fundraiser, where we came out a clear ten points ahead of the runners-up. Not bad, eh?
- [The wonders of modern technology](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/my-writing/the-wonders-of-modern-technology/): When I sent a letter to Who Do You Think You Are? magazine, I attached some images stored on my computer.  Very close to the deadline for publication, I was asked if I could provide a better digital image of the regimental photograph and had to explain that it was now in the possession of a second cousin in Australia. Originally written as a story for children, a few tweaks made it appropriate for all ages. Who hasn’t dreamed of an unexpected windfall when money is tight? That it was very well deserved in this case is, I think, a bonus. Honesty was definitely the best policy for struggling young mum Daisy and even the villain of the piece came good in the end. The main part of the evening was taken up by York Radio’s poet laureate Olivia Mulligan (below), but Nicky, Sudip and I from the Write-On! Ripon group were also invited to read some of our work to a small but appreciative audience.
- [Blithe Spirit](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/blithe-spirit/): Always a supporter of local AmDram, especially when one of my friends has a leading role, I went along to the opening night of the Masham Players’ latest production. It’s a very wordy play and, as one would expect from anything written by Noel Coward, full of quick fire witticisms. To appreciate them all, I should have to see the play again, maybe several times, but the set was very effective and I particularly liked the way the ghostly apparitions were portrayed.

- [Spike no longer!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/spike-no-longer/): Jeffrey Holland’s one-man show ‘and this is my friend Mr Laurel’ at Ripon Arts Hub last night was very entertaining. Inspired by a love (ever since boyhood visits to the cinema) of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, his monologue was an excellent blend of humour and pathos. I also enjoyed the second half, when he came down amongst the audience out of costume for a Q & A session. (Can it really be 40 years since ‘Hi-de-Hi’?) As a curtain raiser for this year’s Ripon Theatre Festival, it was an ideal choice.

It has a large cast of characters, some new and some recurring, but short chapters and clear changes to different points of view combined to keep the narrative clear in my head. - [Ripon hears the Accession Proclamation](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/ripon-hears-the-accession-proclamation/): I was proud to be among a large crowd of Riponians present in the Market Place on Sunday afternoon. We’d gathered there to hear the Proclamation, read out from the balcony of the Town Hall by Mr Richard Compton, Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire. How poignant it was that the banners hung up to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee were still in place.  Afterwards, we sang ‘God Save the King’ for the first time ever for almost everyone present and gave three hearty cheers for Charles III. - [First presentation since before lockdown!](https://maggiecobbett.co.uk/general/first-presentation-since-before-lockdown/):   It gave me enormous pleasure to speak to Ripon Writers’ Group, currently approaching its 40th anniversary, on the subject of writing ‘fillers’. Having been a member for around half that time, I didn’t even consider charging a fee for the presentation, but it feels now as though my wheels are back in motion. The little handbook has always been my best seller and earned squillions for readers who’ve followed its advice. The market changes, but the principles remain pretty much the same.
